Stone Temple Pilots are an American rock band from San Diego, California. Fronted by the iconic and enigmatic Scott Weiland, they are best remembered for hits such as "Sex Type Thing," "Plush," and "Interstate Love Song." Initially lumped in with the other major grunge bands of the 1990s' with their debut album Core, they eventually established themselves as one of the most versatile bands in popular music, with each subsequent albums featuring a variety of different styles and genres; this varied and unique sound is perhaps best showcased on 1996's Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop.
The band was formed in 1985 and kept the same lineup of Weiland on vocals, brothers Robert and Dean DeLeo on bass and lead guitar, and Eric Krentz on drums, until their breakup in 2002. In 2010, the band reunited and released a self titled sixth album, but dissolved again in 2013 when Weiland was fired after several erratic performances, after which he was briefly replaced by the late Chester Bennington of Linkin Park.
Weiland, known as much for his personal demons as his influential vocals and songwriting, passed away two years later in December of 2015. As of today, STP are still a unit and are looking for a new singer, though it'll be nigh-on impossible to replace Weiland's versatility and charisma.
A truly, unique, influential and underrated band.
